From birth to the racetrack..

Toniq Ltd was founded in 2003 by Chairman Colin Williams. The company was formed as the holding company for the IPR of the Toniq R, an innovative   leap forward for the lightweight sports car market. This exciting concept car was designed and built as part of Colin's Transport Design Degree Course at The University of Huddersfield.

Colin's design Portfolio spans almost 15yrs of extensive industry experience to including time with automotive legends such as TVR and MARCOS Engineering. Alongside time spent with the larger manufacturers Colin has also completed a wide range of freelance design work ranging from small projects on body kit design for high end Luxury Saloons and Sports Cars to the productionisation of prototypes.

Colin's skills span the entire Design process from Background Research, Market identification and 2D sketch programs incorporating adobe Photoshop renderings, 1:4 scale models in styling clay for 3D studies and form development, 1:1 scale buck and prototype realisation, final surfacing and mould preparation, realising production from prototypes and finally full production tool making.

Developing a modern icon

The 5 years from 2003 saw the Toniq R undergo an extensive productionisation program. Where the Toniq R differed to other new offerings in the Automotive industry, was that it was not designed over its own bespoke chassis and drivetrain. For the purposes of scale and proportion the Original Concept was built over a classic Lotus 7 inspired Chassis. In order to move forward with R&D the 'R' continued to rehouse a classic 7 chassis which Toniq then set about rigorous testing on UK Circuits, Motorsport events and of course England's finest B roads.

The results of the Toniq R development programme led Toniq to Caged, a Specialist Roll Cage and Chassis Manufacturer.

A new era for the Toniq sportscar range dawned with the concept of producing a brand new car, to be known as the Toniq CB range.

The pair began the process of creating a bespoke chassis capable of delivering the dynamic performance that the stunning looks promised – A state of the art chassis that is both more refined and agile than the lightweight specialist sports car market has ever seen. Lighter, stronger, stiffer, faster – a recipe capable of winning Championships!

The innovation did not stop at an imaginative design and a state of the art chassis, Toniq were striving to produce a car that was easy to build too. Using the latest in CAD - CAM technology Phil was able to design and model every part of the bespoke chassis and its associated componentry to fit perfectly. Using 3D scans of the cars drivetrain dropped into the model of the chassis, it was possible to make even the smallest brackets required to complete the final assembly. Even the rivet holes for the aluminium panels were designed into the chassis tubes so that the panels would fit perfectly every time with no need for trimming, clamping and drilling. Using the finished CAD model of the chassis it was also possible to carry out extensive analysis of the structure and its performance including; component fatigue, crash simulation, dynamic geometry change through the wheel travel envelope, camber, caster and the elimination of bump steer.

All of the chassis jigs, tubes, plates and panelling are Laser cut direct from the CAD drawings, minimising the possibilities for error and distortion. The result is a chassis that can be built to a tolerance of +/- 0.5mm across the entire structure!

However, more important than the technical jargon is the finished machine that all of the extensive design and development work has created. Just one drive in the sensational new Toniq CB will showcase the cars incredible dynamic ability, from excellent ride quality through to the astonishing levels of traction and beautifully judged handling balance. The Toniq CB is a machine at the forefront of the specialist automotive industry, stunning contemporary design combined seamlessly with cutting edge chassis and suspension technology to produce a sportscar of the very highest quality.
